Garruk Wildspeaker is a Planeswalker who wields green magic. His specialty is creature magic: spells that coax abundant mana from the land, summon wild beasts, and unleash the ferocity and power of his summoned creatures.
Physically, Garruk is immense - somewhere around 8 feet tall, and he’s human. Over time, Garruk has used growth and vigor magic so frequently that he’s permanently enhanced his own physical size. A mage weaves magic, but sometimes magic weaves the mage, too.
Garruk is a hunter to the core, a planeswalking predator whose hunting ground is the entire Multiverse. Gripped with a need to test his might and resolve against greater and greater challenges, his life's calling has become an endless hunt of the most ferocious and dangerous game that each plane can offer.
So far Garruk's travels have brought him experiences and trials he never could have imagined. The dangers he's faced have forced his abilities in druidism and creature summoning far past their prior limits, and each day his collection of trophies grows. But recently he's faced a new kind of prey: a fellow planeswalker. This is new territory for Garruk. Never before has his quarry been so crafty, so resourceful, or so elusive. Garruk's true hunt has just begun.
Garruk the Veil-Cursed
In a confrontation with Liliana Vess, he was cursed by Liliana and her dreaded Chain Veil. Wracked by a slow transformation into a monstrous perversion of his former self, he's running out of time. He has always been a matchless hunter, but Liliana is a different kind of prey than he's used to, and the local humans have been attacking him on sight. For once, he's questioning whether he'll be able to track down his quarry before she escapes into the Multiverse again, leaving him to wonder whether he'll be able to survive his own next planeswalk. Now he is on her trail and the affliction with black mana has only made the massive beast-hunter all the more relentless.
Since being cursed by the Chain Veil, his nature spells have been tainted by black magic. As the curse takes hold and Garruk's fierce predator-companions become sickly fiends, he finds that he's gaining new, chilling powers of death. This only enrages him more. Liliana still carries the shadowy Chain Veil, and Garruk won't stop until he's cured of his intolerable death-tainted state. If he can survive his curse, Garruk will employ his hunter's instincts to track Liliana on the world of Innistrad in the hopes of confronting her.
Hope on Innistrad
Garruk tracked Liliana from Kessig and finally intercepted her in a marshy swamp. The two fought, and because Liliana was now reluctant to use the Chain Veil in every fight, Garruk briefly had the advantage. But Garruk's strength was diminished because of the Chain Veil's curse. His green-aligned magic has weakened, being replaced by nascent black-aligned magic. He wasn't strong enough to fight Liliana at her own game and was bested by his nemesis, who cheerfully left him surrounded by ghouls and continued on her demon-hunting quest.
Close to death and tormented by pain and fury, Garruk dispatched the ghouls, but his mind slipped away from him. He wandered in blind circles, shouting at the ravens and imagined monsters. It might have been the end of the great hunter, but for Avacyn's curing the werewolves of their lycanthropy with the Cursemute.
When Avacyn's magic reached him, Garruk regained his senses. He stared down at his arms, watching the black veins receding from his skin. He was overcome with joy at the sudden absence of pain and sickness. But it was a falsehood. Within seconds the veins reappeared, his blood seemed to thicken to tar, and his back bent under the weight of the curse once again. The cursemute was enough to bring him back from madness and death, but it was not enough to cure him.
After slogging his way out of the swamp, he came upon Angel's Way, a well-traveled road between Kessig and Thraben. He knew the witch was heading to Thraben, and he could doggedly continue his pursuit. Or he could strike out another way, toward the origin of the magic he had felt so strongly. There was a power on this plane that could cure curses. Maybe there was another way to rid him of his evil burden—a way that didn't involve the witch.
Sometimes a straight line wasn't the best way to catch a beast. And sometimes the quickest route to a kill was the longest path through the forest. Yes, this day he would let his senses guide him. Garruk knew his hunt for Liliana was far from over. But for now, he turned away from Thraben and headed toward the rising sun.
The curse has blunted his connection with nature, but has only heightened his desire to hunt. Garruk sought the aid of Avacyn, but ultimately the cursemute did not help him, and the curse has worsened.
Garruk, hunter of the planes, has been corrupted. The twisted Chain Veil has darkened his mind. After hunting Liliana on Innistrad and escaping execution, Garruk now sees Planeswalkers as the greatest quarry.
